RAMANUJAN: LETTERS AND COMMENTARY (History of Mathematics 9) By Bruce C. With our cutting-edge curriculum, we want to give kids a chance to hone their mathematical abilities and contribute to the field.Ĭook, R. We think it's our little way of honouring S. As Ramanujan influenced us, we aspire to inspire the next generation of mathematicians. We are proud to be Indian proponents of the mental math curriculum. Our goal at Kids Abacus is to help kids get over their arithmetic fears, learn to do mental math, and grow to enjoy numbers. Mathematicians still study these notebooks trying to validate Ramanujan's unpublished findings and theories. Many of Ramanujan's mathematical discoveries and concepts that were not published during his lifetime can be found in these notebooks. The "Lost Notebook" is a collection of three notebooks and a bundle of sheets discovered after his passing. ![]() Ramanujan tragically died in 1920 at 37, yet his contributions to science continue to this day. Throughout his life, he was recognised with numerous awards, including a fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge, which at the time was a remarkable distinction for someone of Indian ancestry. Ramanujan was elected to the Royal Society of London in 1918 after his work received widespread acclaim and was published in English and European periodicals. Additionally, he developed the Ramanujan summation method, a potent instrument for analysing divergent series. He also made substantial contributions to learning special functions and elliptic integrals. His work on the Riemann series and the functional equations of the zeta function is still extensively studied today. Ramanujan was a mathematician who was well ahead in his understanding of continuing fractions. ![]() The partition function, which represents the variety of ways a positive integer can be written as a sum of positive integers, was one of Ramanujan's most important contributions. He had the chance to collaborate with some of the top mathematicians of his era and disseminate his research among the larger mathematical community. As a result of their correspondence, Trinity College in Cambridge and the University of Madras eventually granted Ramanujan a scholarship and grant. Ramanujan started corresponding with British mathematician Godfrey H. He had a setback in 1903 when he was denied a scholarship from the University of Madras for skipping other classes, but he persisted in developing his theories.ĭespite being largely self-taught and lacking access to current mathematical literature, he was nonetheless able to make important discoveries and create novel procedures. Ramanujan's love of mathematics began when he was only 15 years old. In recognition of his birth, December 22 is observed as Indian National Mathematics Day, and at Kids Abacus, we use this day to remember and appreciate the outstanding mathematician. His contributions to number theory continue to be researched and honoured today. Many people agree that Srinivasa Ramanujan is among the best mathematicians ever.
